Hey, you say you’re not interested in learning about scriptwriting and filmmaking ? Too complicated ! You’ll just enjoy watching. What if by studying the storytelling that goes into writing a script, you’ll learn things that’ll help you with other forms of storytelling -- even writing a novel ? Remember, in today’s world a story might start as a news article then be turned into a book, a play, a film, a series, and a video game !
What I love about using scriptwriting and filmmaking to teach you StoryTelling basics is that it teaches you that a story can be told in so many different dimensions ! To write a script you need to understand how to ‘see’ it as a film, complete with its own world of visuals and sounds. You can contribute to the power of the story without using any words ! Coming up with a strong wardrobe choice can help create the myth of a character and make them unforgettable.
We'll first play the Story Sharing Game. You'll be surprised by the real life short stories that players spontaneously remember -- including yourself. We'll take one of those stories and I'll teach you how to turn it into script format, explaining how scripts are written as blueprints to give information to the team that will transform the script into a film. We'll go over basics like three Act Story Structure, Theme, Character Development and Back Story --- basics that will help you analyze or 'deconstruct' in new ways the stories you consume (from films to novels to games).
This workshop is also an introduction to my Beginning Scriptwriting Class, that I'll be offering in September. I'd love to inspired you to try team storytelling ! Write and shoot a short practice film with your family and friends, using resources you already have --- for fun, to learn, and to be together in a new, creative way !
